Volunteer Gardening for the Aged and Disabled:

As part of LIGHT’s social justice compartment, we are organizing for a team of 20-25 people aged 13-49 to help on the 4th Saturday of every month from 9am-12pm from October (2010 to February (2011) to revive and trasform gardens of Aged and Disabled people in the Northern Beaches.

You’ll be given everything like tools, gloves, shirt, hat, gardening training, plants, garden plans/instructions, and will be working under a professional gardener who will be supervising us.

By us servicing gardens for these people, they are able to remain living in their homes because they don’t have to leave due to  being unable to service their garden.  This service also brings undescribable happiness to these people as well as great company and many times these people make cakes and drinks for the workers. Not only do the people who recieve these gardens attain happiness but so too the volunteers when they realize that they have made a huge difference for someone in need whilst having fun bonding together and building team work, to make a great looking garden.

If you are interested, contact Cameron Smit (Parish Youth Minister) on cameron.smit@ozemail.com.au or 0432 895 304.

Support the Homeless this Saturday…

Hey everyone,

This Saturday i’m looking for people to join me in selling raffle tickets in Dee Why to raise funds for Street Mission as part of LIGHT’s Social Justice Service.

Street Mission is an organisation that provides needs for the homeless along the northern beaches. They run street cafe’s and hostels and youth reach services and so forth. At this time of year they are in a real need to raise funds to provide for people in the cold.

So it’s on at 9:30am-11:45am at Dee Why Shops (Outside Woolworths on Oaks Avenue).

I’ll be going for the whole time. You don’t have to come for the whole time, you could just come for an hour or so.

This will count as intern hours if you’re an intern.

Anyone over 12 can come!

Let me know by Wed night at the latest if you can come.

Cheers, Cam :)

Simply Sharing Week 2010 in June!

Welcome to Simply Sharing Week 2010!

Simply Sharing Week is an ecumenical initiative of several Christian relief and development agencies in Australia. Each year, Simply Sharing Week encourages Australians to learn about and become involved in, issues of social justice. This year Simply Sharing Week will focus on refugees and will be held from 6–12 June; however you can participate at the time of year that best suits your schedule.

The theme for 2010 is: “See the real me, not just the refugee”

Refugees and asylum seekers are often portrayed in a negative light in Australia — sometimes by politicians and the media. Such stereotypes can lead Australians to look at refugees and asylum seekers in a critical way.

These Simply Sharing Week resources and activities are designed primarily as educational resources to increase student understanding of this issue, which is likely to feature predominantly in this year’s federal elections. The resources provide tools to help tackle the stereotyping of refugees and asylum seekers. They are designed to give us an insight into the journey that many refugees are forced to take, and to remind us that refugees and asylum seekers are unique individuals — with their own experiences, strengths and identities. That’s why we are calling on people to see the whole person instead of simply seeing people as “the refugee”.

The resources encourage students to be informed, to be involved and to do something to make a difference. This year we are asking students to raise local community awareness. This may be as simple as a poster or could involve multimedia, a debate or assembly item.

We also encourage schools and students to learn more about people in their own communities who have come to Australia, seeking protection as refugees. With this goal in mind, we are asking students to run their awareness raising campaigns within their local communities and sow the seeds of change.

Resource materials
Resources have been designed to help students, parish and community groups to understand our relationship with the global community, with the spirit of sharing in mind. You’ll find stories and activities for participants to engage with the issues around refugees.

Be More Weekend

Be More Weekend
About the Caritas Australia Be More Weekend 6 – 8 August 2010

Three Days, Three Actions, Three Steps

The Be More Weekend is an opportunity for you, your family, school, parish and community to come together in solidarity:

To be just … conscious that our actions impact on all members of the global community;

To be green … knowing that we are stewards of creation;

To be more … by making simple changes to everyday lives.

This year the three days of action focus on water. The Weekend is designed to be a grassroots, community-based event. By taking three simple actions over three days together we can work towards conserving water in Australia and raising awareness on the global issue of access to clean water.

Step one: Organise your group and register
Approach people in your community who are passionate, creative and eager to create a just world. Tap into local community groups like youth groups, schools, clubs and your parish and register.

Step two: Plan your three days

Choose one action that you and your community can do each day:

Personal
Water Fast: 20 litres for the day
Water Audit: home or school
Back to Tap: educate yourself on the issues of bottled water

Community
Walk for Water: Take the Caritas K’s challenge
Be Green: clean up local waterways
Be Water Smart: spread the water conservation message

Advocacy
Be Creative Challenge: use your imagination to educate others
Be Local Action: improve your neighbourhood
Be a Voice: for those who don’t have access to clean drinking water

Step three: Share your actions and continue the journey
After enjoying the fantastic Be More Weekend, it’s time to thank those who helped you along the way and share your photos, videos and stories with the Be More community. It’s also time to reflect on the impact of your activities and you can continue to Be More every day. Sign up to the Be More Challenge and aspire to Be More everyday!
